[Weirdly, it's not the whining or the tapping that wakes him so much as the terrified urgency of it all, like the Togepi's need resonates with something trapped inside him for years. His eyes slide open, and he lies there in the dark for half a second before he hears the noise at his door and lurches to open it.]

[With everyone taking up evening jobs, it seems like the best time to get someone's attention long enough to talk is around sunrise and just before sunset. So here Carolina is, at the door of York's room, Stripes at her feet.]

North and Carolina work night shifts, anyway. York rubs the heel of his hand against his eye, squints at the screen, and feels his own face fall when he sees the message.

[Pidgey post arrives for York! It's a basket with two eggs tucked inside - one brown with a yellow ring, and one pale pink with a flower pattern. There's also a note.]

The brown one is to complete your bear collection, apparently. Thank North for that one.

The pink one is a Munna - they help with nightmares. It sounds like you could use one just as much as me. Really, your whole group might need some Munna. Just remember that you're not in this alone. It sounds like you've got a good group with you, and you can always call me if you need to.

Hello, Mr. York. It's Ashley. I'd like to tell you first that both Massena and Rascal are being wonderfully sweet. I'm sure you can pass this along to Mr. North.

The reason for this message however is that I'm unexpectedly going to be in Goldenrod City tomorrow! Someone is flying me in. I don't want to skip a bunch of cities, so I'm returning to Cherrygrove after a few days, but I'm meeting someone there and wanted to ask:

Should I return Massena and Rascal? You told me to do so when I reached the city, though this is an unorthodox way for me to reach it so I wanted to check in.

I can't ask North right this second what he wants, but his answer's probably going to be similar to mine: If Massena wants to come home, I'll be happy to see her, but if she'd like to keep keeping you company, I don't mind. My job right now's keeping me from traveling too much for the other badges, and Massena doesn't need a lot more training anyway. Lets me focus on the littler dudes in the meantime.

What're you gonna be doing here in the big city, besides meeting your friend? I'm sure one of us could come meet you and show you around if you want.

His big shoulders are hunched, one of his hands is wrapped in a bloodied bandage, his t-shirt is stained with what smells like coffee, and his eyes have the sunken look you get when you've either successfully fought back multiple onslaughts of tears or not slept in a month.

He looks like he needs a hug, is what he looks like. And the "ghost" of South is still following him, biting her lower lip in concern and looking at York with blue eyes hoping that he can fix his sad fiance.]
