Goooood evening, residents of Johto. It's a lovely, drizzly January day, and I've got a question you folks might be able to answer for me. Consider it an informal poll.

[York looks comfortable and cozy as he lounges around his house, still wearing his ugly Christmas sweater.]

Now, I understand that this place just isn't equipped to support a Grifball League, but there's got to be more to life than just hockey and baseball. Are there Pokémon Olympics or something I should tune into? And, hey, what kind of sports did you guys have back in your worlds? Were they fun? Would you recreate 'em here if you could?

[He rubs his chin for a moment, then adds:]

If anyone around Goldenrod's interested in forming some kind of low-key community sports team--y'know, something for people, not Pokémon--let me know. I might be able to help us get something set up before baseball season starts.

... I... guess. I did kind of lose three years of being a teenager.

Don't get me wrong--there are people out there who'll tell you that high school's the best time of your life, but those people are lying out of their asses. But figuring that all out with other kids is important sometimes.

Who knows. You might find a lot of 'em are in the same boat as you.

[He just laughs a little bit.]

I never even made it into high school.

Well, now you get to have that experience, except without teachers breathing down your neck about homework or being forced to participate in humiliating social milestones, yeah? That's one thing this world's good for.

That's true. Homework always sucked. Now I can just give myself assignments, but it's in getting the next badge or something rather than doing five pages of division.

Not a big math fan, huh?

I was better in literature and art.

That's right, you told me you drew. I was always more of a calc and social sciences guy. Got my naps in during English.

Different kinds of nerd, right?

Hey! Look, man, I'll have you know I was one hundred percent all-American jackass jock.

That's just the stuff I was good at. I always liked taking things apart, putting them back together again. Math's just the purest form of that.

I guess that's true. Art's kind of like that, in a way. You have to see stuff as shapes and lines.

Oh, dude, no way. That got phased out of schools centuries ago. I was an asshole, not a child torturer.

You're right about art, though. The geometric aspects of it, anyway. I had a...a friend, he'd calm himself down a lot thinking about statistics and turning numbers into shapes.

Not in my time. That's... uh. That's how I met up with one of the people who I ended up on my... 'team', I guess you could call it. And that's how I ended up with them when it all started.

I never turned numbers into shapes, but I can kind of see where that could come from.

The kid trying to flush you down a toilet ended up on your team?

No, he walked in on people trying to flush me and got them to leave me alone. That day, at least.

Ah, gotcha. Good, every team needs someone like him on it.

Yeah. He sort of ended up our leader. Like, we all pitched in info, but he made the final calls.

[That makes him smile.]

You don't happen to've met Carolina, have you? Redhead, rides a Tyrantrum around sometimes.

I don't think so. Was she your leader?

Uh-huh. Still is, in a way. North and I probably could've gotten along on our own, we're both grown men, but with Carolina here, well. Things just feel more right with all three of us around.

Yeah, I can understand that. It's easier for someone to just point you where to go sometimes.

Yeah. That and, well. If Carolina was our number one, I was always her second. You know what I mean? If she needed something done, she turned to me. That's the kind of setup I work best in. North's sort of the same, in his own way. We need someone to support, and Carolina's good at forging forward.

Yeah. I was always air support and intel, Ax was technology, Cassie worried about ethics, Marco was the cynic who pointed out weaknesses in plans, Jake was the leader and... and Rachel was the... main fighter...

[His expression darkens for a moment, before he pulls himself back.]

Anyway, we all had our skills.

[York catches that, but, well. He's not gonna push the kid. He understands.]

Yeah. We were like that, too. We all had our specialties. Carolina was our leader and our best at CQC, North and Wyoming were snipers...

[He trails off, not for any difficult memory, but because he just. Misses it powerfully, sometimes. How good they'd been, when they'd been good.]

Yeah we... usually just used different morphs. We just got comfortable with a role and stuck with it.
