Goooood evening, residents of Johto. It's a lovely, drizzly January day, and I've got a question you folks might be able to answer for me. Consider it an informal poll.

[York looks comfortable and cozy as he lounges around his house, still wearing his ugly Christmas sweater.]

Now, I understand that this place just isn't equipped to support a Grifball League, but there's got to be more to life than just hockey and baseball. Are there Pokémon Olympics or something I should tune into? And, hey, what kind of sports did you guys have back in your worlds? Were they fun? Would you recreate 'em here if you could?

[He rubs his chin for a moment, then adds:]

If anyone around Goldenrod's interested in forming some kind of low-key community sports team--y'know, something for people, not Pokémon--let me know. I might be able to help us get something set up before baseball season starts.

Basketball, baseball, football - uh, American football, not soccer, though we had that too - volleyball... you get th epicture. I know Andalites have something called 'driftball' which Ax explained to me once and I think it sounds like basketball but in low-gravity? I know Hork-Bajir don't really have sports, and I doubt Yeerks do either and I don't think I'd want to know about them if they did.

And the the Skrit Na pretty much just make a sport out of kidnapping humans and other species and flying around with them or putting them into zoos.

[Okay, he probably could have made comments on low-grav basketball and what a bad and thus amazing idea that's been in his experience, but the last thing gets him right in a sore spot.]

There a lot of 'em, these Skrit Na? They get away with that often?

Uh... I don't know. You - well I don't know how it is in your world, but a lot of those stories from my world about being abducted by aliens in big fat disc-shaped UFOs? Skrit Na.

From what I hear they're pretty scattered, though.

Mmmgh. How it is in my world is less that type of encounter and more of the ongoing open intergalactic war variety.

Yeah... the intergalactic war thing was barely averted in my world. It uh... it sucks.

[... Anyway, sports.]

I bet we could make a sport out of balancing on Flying Pokemon... but that might be kind of... dangerous.

It wouldn't be too bad if we held it over a deep enough lake. I mean, unless people can't swim. Then they're kinda S.O.L.

I... can't swim all that well. But I'm good enough to be confident that I'm not going to fall.

Yeah, that's the spirit I like to hear! And we'd set up lifeguards, anyway. I'm not completely unreasonable.

I've been practicing riding on them for months anyway - I wouldn't be a very good circus act if I didn't.

Think you'd even have any competition? You might have an unfair advantage, kid.

Maybe. I could always judge.

That wouldn't be as fun, though, right? Shoo-in or not, I still think you'd oughta have a chance to compete.

I dunno. I never really hung out with a lot of them other than the others who fought alongside me.

Yeah, true, though I seem to be making friends with people who are already past that stage.

Nothing wrong with that. Guess it just means you're mature for your age. Still, you might learn things from hanging out with people around your time of life.

... I... guess. I did kind of lose three years of being a teenager.

Don't get me wrong--there are people out there who'll tell you that high school's the best time of your life, but those people are lying out of their asses. But figuring that all out with other kids is important sometimes.

Who knows. You might find a lot of 'em are in the same boat as you.

Well, now you get to have that experience, except without teachers breathing down your neck about homework or being forced to participate in humiliating social milestones, yeah? That's one thing this world's good for.

That's true. Homework always sucked. Now I can just give myself assignments, but it's in getting the next badge or something rather than doing five pages of division.

Not a big math fan, huh?
