[The feed flips on to show a man holding a brush in one hand and a young Shinx in his lap. Both of them appear to have been freshly bathed, with the damp Shinx swaddled in one of Cherrygrove Inn's warm, fluffy towels. When all of her wriggling and protesting comes to naught, she just lies there in her towel burrito and seethes. York, on the other hand, has found that shops in this world do, apparently, sell hair product for humans, and he couldn't be happier. He's fixed his hair for the first time in days. Life is wonderful.

Not that vanity's necessarily the reason he hasn't introduced himself to the PokéConnect community at large yet. It's just. You know. Coincidence.]

Good morning, people. And Pokémon, too, of course, can't forget you guys. For those of you I haven't spoken to yet, I'm York, I'm one of your more recent unwitting transplants to sunny Johto. Or, well, partially cloudy Johto, anyway. How about that weather, huh?

[The temperature has dropped literally twenty degrees in the five days since he got here, oh my god, why. Being caught out on the road in yesterday's rainstorm sucked. Now he's warm and dry and comfortable in a clean shirt a couple sizes too big for him (and he's not exactly a small man). Really, what could be better than being alive here and now?

He rubs the Shinx's fur drier, unwraps her, and then holds her still before she can escape so he can brush the tangles out. She mewls fussily, but his hands are steady, and eventually she relaxes--if mutinously--into the attention. He chuckles a little.]

But okay, I'm not actually here to make small talk. I got a question for you folks.

[He turns the PokéGear with the back of his brush to show another Pokémon, an Elgyem, bundled up in a blanket on the bed, fast asleep.]

Can someone tell me more about Psychic Pokémon? [He goes back to brushing.] I get that they read minds--Delta Two there communicates with me all the time--but she doesn't use words so it's hard to get more...complicated ideas across, sometimes. I was wondering, can you train them to talk? Or do other things? These guys are obviously a lot more intelligent than the animals back on my Earth, so I guess you could say I'm curious about what they can do.

[The Shinx's eyes are half-closed now as York brushes away. Someone's a sleepy baby.]

Holy shit. All right, that's definitely something to try with Two. I'm in Cherrygrove now so I should be able to find something similar.

[He hits a particularly difficult snag in his Shinx's fur, and he puts the brush down to try and loosen it up between his fingers first. The Shinx grumbles but doesn't move. While York remains unperturbed by Nanako's stare, the Shinx is watching her moodily. York doesn't notice.]

She's real smart, you don't even know, but that wasn't something I thought these guys could do. I mean, you don't really hear much about animals reading back on Earth. 'Least, not the Earth where I'm from.

So is--what'd you say, Pumpkaboo? Is that a Psychic one, too?

They're all smart in different ways. My Sylveon, Himiko, is really good with people's feelings and knows when to cheer someone up!

Yeah, animals in Japan can't usually read, but there's a fox in my town can can read people's wishes on the little plaque at temples.

[Rise looks down at Nanako, who finally looks away. The Meowstic nods and waddles off.]

She's a ghost type! And so adorable~

[And said Pumpkaboo is really small, and being a ghost-type, able to just float along. Well, more like being pushed through the air towards their trainer by Nanako.]

Isn't she cute?

It's--it's a pumpkin ghost.

[But York laughs. His Shinx looks up at him, miffed at all the commotion, and he smooths the tuft of hair between her ears until she settles again, eyes closed.]

A cute pumpkin ghost. They really got all kinds here, huh? She's so little.

Isn't she? They come in four different sizes, and she hatched as the smallest size.

[Rise gently grabs Kabocha, her hands almost wrapped completely around the little thing.]

There's all sorts of tiny and giant Pokémon. Once Kanji evolves from a Pupitar to a Tyranitar, he'll be too big to go through doors.

Sounds like a couple of my old buddies. This one guy, Maine, I'm pretty sure we had to buy a new motorcycle once after he sat on it.

[York continues to pet his electric lioncat, getting into the good spots behind her ears. Sure, she and D-2 are cute and tiny now, but...]

How big do they usually get, these guys? Or is it pretty diverse, like back home?

[Kid said she was from Japan, right? That's Earth, close enough to call home.]

So he was huge?

[Pumpkaboo escapes and floats away again. Pumpkin-ghost on the run.]

Yup! I don't have any really big ones with me, but one of my friends has bear Pokémon that are huge! One of them looks like she's got icicles coming out of her mouth, but she's a sweetheart~

Enormous. Like a mountain.

[He watches the little jack o'lantern drift off. Man, all these little dudes are so damn weird, they're great.]

Oh man, so she's some kind of ice bear? I guess it'd be the equivalent of a polar bear back on Earth, except awesome.

[And also probably not extinct. We don't ask about Earth's biodiversity in the year of our savior Master Chief 25XX.]

That sounds like a Shadow my friends fought once...

[Which looked like sparkly rainbow Hulk Hogan's that could kill in one hit.

She laughs softly, nodding.]

Except she stands on her two hind legs all the time. Her name is Cho. Rosa is a Pangoro, and she looks like some rogue ninja panda.

[At "rogue ninja panda," York's gaze flicks towards something off-screen, but while his eyes crinkle at the corners like he's got an inside joke waiting, he just nods and keeps petting his Shinx. Little darling's fallen asleep now.]

A Shadow, huh? That sounds interesting.

[Wow, she keeps trying not to talk about those things from her world, and now she's let it slip to a stranger.]

Shadows are pretty dangerous. Except my friend. He's....... unique.

Haha. I kind of know how that goes.

[And just like that, he doesn't press.]

Your friends keep each other safe?

Of course! And I do what I can to keep them safe, too. I just can't fight like they can... or really at all. I'm better at just finding things out about the enemy.

Hey, you know what they say about knowing being half the battle?

[He stops petting his Shinx and props his elbow on the armrest, his chin on his fist.]

It's not true. Knowing's, like, ninety percent of the battle, and that's low-balling it. Take it from me, I used to be Special Ops. I know what I'm talking about.

[This is the third person that's pretty much not told her that what she does isn't useless.]

... Yeah, I'm glad I can help them in just the way I do. I can make them maps, tell them weaknesses of the enemy, health updates, and all those things! Plus, I always know where they are. That's gotta count for more than just standing on the sidelines.

[He whistles.]

Geez, all that? Damn, girl. You know, where I'm from, they spent--I don't know--probably trillions of dollars trying to make field equipment that does just what you do? I'm tellin' you, ninety percent of the battle, minimum.

[Oh now she looks proud of herself. Which deflates after a moment.]

Well, it's what I can do with my Persona.... I don't have that power here, so I'm just a normal girl. But I am good at remembering things that help out in my Pokémon battles, so at least I can be useful with that. It's how I've gotten so many badges!

[Well, without his armor, he's just...okay yeah no he's still not totally a normal guy. Muscle and years of experience don't just go away, apparently.]

Oh yeah? How many you got?

Seven so far.

[She's not kidding. She's going for another when she gets to Mahogany.]

Whoa-ho! All right, that's impressive. Do me a favor, though: You meet a lady calling herself Carolina, you don't tell her that, okay? She'll take it as a challenge and drag me and my old friend along in her dust.

Really? That sounds like a few friends of mine... but they're not here, except one.

The friends you help fight back home, right?

[He knows how that goes. Or knew how it went.]

They sound fun. It's good to have someone here you know, too.

Yeah. They are! We've done a lot together, dangerous and not so dangerous. I wouldn't trade them for the worlds.

Mmm, I know what you mean.

Couple of my old friends turned up here within thirty-six hours of me. We're traveling together now, and...it's good. Haven't seen either of them in a long time.

Lucky! It took months before anyone from my world came here! And then I flew to Cherrygrove to meet him, plus, he wanted cake. I don't know what to do with him sometimes...

Buy him a cake, I guess? A reunion's as good an excuse as any to throw a party. Maybe that's what I'll do, soon as we hit a town with a bar. Cake and beer, just like old times.
