[The feed flips on to show a man holding a brush in one hand and a young Shinx in his lap. Both of them appear to have been freshly bathed, with the damp Shinx swaddled in one of Cherrygrove Inn's warm, fluffy towels. When all of her wriggling and protesting comes to naught, she just lies there in her towel burrito and seethes. York, on the other hand, has found that shops in this world do, apparently, sell hair product for humans, and he couldn't be happier. He's fixed his hair for the first time in days. Life is wonderful.

Not that vanity's necessarily the reason he hasn't introduced himself to the PokéConnect community at large yet. It's just. You know. Coincidence.]

Good morning, people. And Pokémon, too, of course, can't forget you guys. For those of you I haven't spoken to yet, I'm York, I'm one of your more recent unwitting transplants to sunny Johto. Or, well, partially cloudy Johto, anyway. How about that weather, huh?

[The temperature has dropped literally twenty degrees in the five days since he got here, oh my god, why. Being caught out on the road in yesterday's rainstorm sucked. Now he's warm and dry and comfortable in a clean shirt a couple sizes too big for him (and he's not exactly a small man). Really, what could be better than being alive here and now?

He rubs the Shinx's fur drier, unwraps her, and then holds her still before she can escape so he can brush the tangles out. She mewls fussily, but his hands are steady, and eventually she relaxes--if mutinously--into the attention. He chuckles a little.]

But okay, I'm not actually here to make small talk. I got a question for you folks.

[He turns the PokéGear with the back of his brush to show another Pokémon, an Elgyem, bundled up in a blanket on the bed, fast asleep.]

Can someone tell me more about Psychic Pokémon? [He goes back to brushing.] I get that they read minds--Delta Two there communicates with me all the time--but she doesn't use words so it's hard to get more...complicated ideas across, sometimes. I was wondering, can you train them to talk? Or do other things? These guys are obviously a lot more intelligent than the animals back on my Earth, so I guess you could say I'm curious about what they can do.

[The Shinx's eyes are half-closed now as York brushes away. Someone's a sleepy baby.]

It's not so bad. Cryo helps for the real long jumps, but mostly we had training in between missions anyway.

What, sick of your animal adventure vacation already?

[Carolina looks York up and down, weighted, like he's the object of what she's really here on vacation to see, like she's drinking him in. A lopsided grin, and she shakes her head.]

No, not yet.

[And she calls him unsubtle.

His brows rise, and then his eyes crinkle in a faint, crooked, incredulous smile.

Really, Carolina? After all this time?]

Well, I hear these sabbaticals can run long. Gotta do what we can in the meantime to keep things interesting, right?

[Shh, York, you saw nothing. Carolina just... Happens to be completely unsubtle about everyone she cares about.

...But she's always been obvious with her feelings for York. With a soft smile she turns as though this is somehow still a secret, like she's only given him a glimpse.

She shrugs, sitting on the bed with this pancham egg in her lap and regarding North's carefully.]

You're right. Might as well play by the rules, I suppose.

Once we're at Violet, I'm going to challenge Falkner. Are you going to challenge the gyms too?

Sufficiently advanced science, and all that... all right. From what I can understand, it's essentially like them tapping into a private server or wifi network. It's not a channel that you mean to be hacked, but they can do it all the same.

... Which also means that strong emotions can set some of them off. When Alice first hatched, she couldn't stop crying around me.

Yeah, probably. Can't let you run away with all the fun, Champ.

[He turns the chair all the way to face her and sits back in it, props his legs up on the bed, crossed at the ankles. He spares one glance at Delta Two to make sure she's still sleeping. She stirs a little, but snuggles back into the egg and blanket with a soft noise.]

I wasn't sure since Two seemed kind of...well, she's not built like a fighter, you know? Like I'd be a dick to make her do that. But Psychic Pokémon have their own way of doing things, apparently, and she's been keeping up with us okay.

[York carries her most of the time, still, but she Tries Her Best. And by now she's proven she can hold her own in combat, too.]

Empress should help, too, after some catch-up training. [Empress twitches an ear, but continues to pointedly ignore them.] If I do end up focusing on other things with Two, I'll still have some power in my corner.

[...Dude, is that really something you want to share. I mean, what does that say about your headspace?]

Gotcha. That's something I have questions about, actually. But--hold on, maybe later. I gotta check on something.

[But York doesn't actually sign off. He just locks the transmission as tightly as he can. Someone figured out how to do that pretty quickly after arriving here.]

Sorry about that. Some of this stuff can get kind of personal, you know?

No matter what I say you're going to get a big head from it.

[The banter is affectionate.]

That's a bullshit cop-out and you know it.

[He missed North so much.]

Ah, hello! I actually had the same problem you're experiencing, though it was with a different species of Pokémon.

[Rossiu motions and a Delphox joins him onscreen, dipping his head slightly in greeting.]

This is Blaze. He started as a Fire-type Pokémon and once he evolved he gained a secondary Psychic-type. At first he didn't really know how to communicate so he was only able to send pictures and vague ideas. It was difficult at first, but my Meowstic was able to help teach him a few things.

[The Meowstic in question is lounging on the bed in the background, not paying any attention to her trainer.]

Perhaps you could look for a Psychic-type Pokémon in the area? I captured Ellie as an Espurr fairly early on in my journey.

[Eh. People know already.]

I know. I made a post about it a while ago so it's not exactly private information anymore.

He's not what I expected in a Trainer... but he's very kind even with what he's been through. I think many trainers are like that. I see a lot of troubled hearts in this place... but they seem to be calmer the longer they spend here.

[He just nudges her gently, smiling a tiny bit.]

You sound like you're from my cousin's favorite TV shows sometimes, you know that?

She's got a lot of potential. Then again-- I get the feeling she'll let you know if there's something she doesn't want to do.

[D-2 has so far been pretty communicative-- it's not been a terrible experience, either.]

Did you find anything else out? I saw you put up a video message.

[Everyone else has been getting the video memo faster than she has.]

[York honestly just wanted to celebrate his hair, okay. Come on. You understand, haircut princess.

His gaze skitters away for a second, though, and he turns to retrieve a mug of coffee from where it was sitting on the desk. From the way he frowns, it's mostly gone cold, but he's gross and he drinks it anyway.]

...I'm trying to see if it'd be possible for a Psychic type like D-2 to take over some of what Delta was doing for me.

[York smiles a little at their exchange and rests his chin in his palm.]

Well, it's not just your intel I'm worried about leaking, no offense or anything. There's at least a couple other troubled hearts I'm looking out for, let's put it that way.

[He removes his head from his hand and scratches lightly at the back of his neck.]

Would you say it...helped at all, having that connection? It couldn't have been too much fun for you, either--[He nods to Alice.]--and I wouldn't want to burden my new buddies here with old war wounds. So that's something I'm concerned about, too, if it'd be too much.

There's a thought. Sort of like a 'mon-to-'mon mentorship, yeah? Sounds like it'd be educational to watch, if nothing else. These guys are pretty fascinating.

[Fascinating and adorable, so far.]

Thing is, a lot of what I'm looking for, they're kind of overtly human problems, you know? I don't know if the little wild guys you can find around here can do too much to help me read or run the depth calculations I need to adjust for my bad eye.

[ He peers at the Shinx with a brief smile before snapping up to look at York once more. ]

It was easy! Pretty too. I can't remember the last time I took a walk like that... We wound up getting stuck in the storm and Stormer didn't want to get into her ball. I don't want to find out whether her mane and tail go out, ya know.

[ He lifts his shoulders and then drops them with a sigh. ] Did you make it here in time to miss most of it, or did you get caught in all of it like I did?

It's very useful! I've found that my Pokémon can usually help each other much better than I can.

[He seems pleased though, even if it is a bit understated.]

Oh, but I have a solution for that! Um, Dimension, if you could--

[The 'Gear glitches a bit on Rossiu's end for a moment before a Porygon appears in front of the screen, shoving its face entirely too close and beeping.]

Ah, this is Dimension, he's a Porygon. When I first arrived here I had never seen technology like this and I had no idea how to work it. I also couldn't read very well, but Dimension found ways to help me with that. He's made the text larger on the screen and he can mess with the audio as well. From what I understand, Porygons aren't common Pokémon, but I received Dimension as my starter.

I'm supposedly a Pokémon Breeder, but I haven't tried any of that yet. I can attempt to breed you a Porygon if you'd like! I think it might be able to help with some of your problems there, at least when it comes to the PokéGear!

...Smart move.

[She isn't surprised. York had been with Delta for... Far longer than she had been with Eta and Iota. He must feel so strange, like something must be missing. Hell, she's been missing having Church bark like a fox in her ear every five minutes to complain about Tucker or Caboose.]

Think it'll work?

[She leans forward, resting her arms on her knees around the egg.]

Cryo is where they freeze you, right? How doesn't that kill you?

Yeah. They are! We've done a lot together, dangerous and not so dangerous. I wouldn't trade them for the worlds.

[Carolina, you don't even know. It's worse than losing his eye had been.

He'd had less to mourn.]

It can't hurt. Or, I'm hoping it can't, anyway. But I heard we can teach them to read, so she can probably handle that so I'm not squinting one-eyed at this tiny screen all the damn time.

[He stares into his coffee cup, then breathes out, going serious.]

And I'm hoping I can find a way to help North, too. He and Theta were together almost as long as D and I.

You showed up with people you know? Interesting. That doesn't seem to happen very often.

[He thinks about it for a moment, and chuckles.]

I guess. I'm not the overly sharing type. And I don't think that our Pokemon will ever really understand our worlds, since this is the only one they've ever known. But they try. And it does help somewhat - the fact that they care. It depends on your Pokemon's personality, of course - I have a few that want little to do with me, two that see me as a source of energy, and one that seems to enjoy using my arms as chew toys. But if you're patient and a little lucky, I find that most of them are good enough company, which is sometimes all it takes.

Oh! Like Zack!

[Seems like York's already got a warm opinion of the Porygon line in general.]

Haha, hell yeah! If you're sure you don't mind, that sounds like it'd be a big help. I've only been here a few days so I don't have a lot of cash on me yet, but I'm gonna look for part-time gigs later today so I'll at least be able to pay you for the trouble.

[He watches Dimension, fascinated, then decides to wave to the guy. What a neat thing. Pokémon are so neat.]

About how much should I be preparing?

I see. That makes sense. They're all pretty unique...

[He pets his Shinx idly.]

I guess I was specifically wondering how often people might train Psychic types in particular as--as a sort of therapy companion, or if that would hurt 'em or get you in trouble with society. Having a mental connection specifically might help in the case I'm thinking of, but I can also see why it could be a problem, if negative emotions affect them that much.
