[The feed flips on to show a man holding a brush in one hand and a young Shinx in his lap. Both of them appear to have been freshly bathed, with the damp Shinx swaddled in one of Cherrygrove Inn's warm, fluffy towels. When all of her wriggling and protesting comes to naught, she just lies there in her towel burrito and seethes. York, on the other hand, has found that shops in this world do, apparently, sell hair product for humans, and he couldn't be happier. He's fixed his hair for the first time in days. Life is wonderful.

Not that vanity's necessarily the reason he hasn't introduced himself to the PokéConnect community at large yet. It's just. You know. Coincidence.]

Good morning, people. And Pokémon, too, of course, can't forget you guys. For those of you I haven't spoken to yet, I'm York, I'm one of your more recent unwitting transplants to sunny Johto. Or, well, partially cloudy Johto, anyway. How about that weather, huh?

[The temperature has dropped literally twenty degrees in the five days since he got here, oh my god, why. Being caught out on the road in yesterday's rainstorm sucked. Now he's warm and dry and comfortable in a clean shirt a couple sizes too big for him (and he's not exactly a small man). Really, what could be better than being alive here and now?

He rubs the Shinx's fur drier, unwraps her, and then holds her still before she can escape so he can brush the tangles out. She mewls fussily, but his hands are steady, and eventually she relaxes--if mutinously--into the attention. He chuckles a little.]

But okay, I'm not actually here to make small talk. I got a question for you folks.

[He turns the PokéGear with the back of his brush to show another Pokémon, an Elgyem, bundled up in a blanket on the bed, fast asleep.]

Can someone tell me more about Psychic Pokémon? [He goes back to brushing.] I get that they read minds--Delta Two there communicates with me all the time--but she doesn't use words so it's hard to get more...complicated ideas across, sometimes. I was wondering, can you train them to talk? Or do other things? These guys are obviously a lot more intelligent than the animals back on my Earth, so I guess you could say I'm curious about what they can do.

[The Shinx's eyes are half-closed now as York brushes away. Someone's a sleepy baby.]

[He considers it a moment more, then looks up at North like something about this setup just occurred to him.]

It's pretty cute. I've heard it grows up to be badass.

[York looking up at him like that takes him a little by surprise.]

...Yeah, I got it for you.

[York himself doesn't know why this isn't processing right until he realizes: He can't remember the last time someone just gave him something. Just because.

His eyes crinkle, and he sets Empress down on the floor (to some fussing; she was half asleep, cockbite!) before standing and tucking the egg under one arm.]

C'mere, you giant son of a bitch.

Well, a very good day to you as well, Mr. York! I'm afraid you'll find that many people on this network aren't much for the preliminaries, when it comes to making conversation, but you mustn't think they're unmannerly for it. It's simply the custom to, er...dive right in with whatever topic you please, I suppose!

How are you finding Johto, may I ask? I know the, um...the first stretch of walking can be a bit...difficult, for some.

Isn't she? They come in four different sizes, and she hatched as the smallest size.

[Rise gently grabs Kabocha, her hands almost wrapped completely around the little thing.]

There's all sorts of tiny and giant Pokémon. Once Kanji evolves from a Pupitar to a Tyranitar, he'll be too big to go through doors.

.... That's really hard to believe.

[Maybe this guy knows North? He seemed like a tall man over the video feed.]

Roxas, and this is my Dedenne, Vivi!

[Vivi squeaked, jumping down onto his trainers shoulder. Still tiny.]

[Good LORD but she's English. Possibly even more English than Reggie. Cute as a button, too. Honestly, just better than Reggie in every possible way. Fuck that guy.]

You know? It was okay, slogging through the rain aside. Can't say I'm used to traveling at the mercy of the elements like that, but it doesn't look like I can just rent a Pelican to pick me up, huh? Just gotta make do.

[Oh dear sweet Master Chief's dick what is he looking at here. He's been playing with the Gear's settings as much as he can over the past few days, trying to figure out a configuration that won't hurt too much to read, but it's still a chore. It's in times like this he really misses Delta.

More and more I'm finding myself thankful to have started with so dear a Pokemon as my Tropius, really — I'm certain I'd not have made the trip, surely, if not for her willingness to walk some of the way for me.

Sounds like a couple of my old buddies. This one guy, Maine, I'm pretty sure we had to buy a new motorcycle once after he sat on it.

[York continues to pet his electric lioncat, getting into the good spots behind her ears. Sure, she and D-2 are cute and tiny now, but...]

How big do they usually get, these guys? Or is it pretty diverse, like back home?

[Kid said she was from Japan, right? That's Earth, close enough to call home.]

[North is in fact a giant and must be stopped.]

Roxas and Vivi. Nice to meet both of you. Usually I've got Delta Two out and about, but she's still napping off our hike, so...

[He takes out a Pokéball and releases his freshly caught little Shinx. She shakes herself and eyes Roxas and Dedenne. She may hardly come a foot off the ground, but somehow, she still gives the impression that she's looking down her nose at them.]

This little lady is Empress. Empress, behave.

[It doesn't seem to subdue her, in fact that comment gets the large panda monster to roar into the feed. If there wasn't a 'gear between them, she'd be exploding his head right about now-

But before she gets the chance to ruin Teddie's things, the suddenly rather calm kid takes the pokegear back from her and pats her fuzzy arm.]

It's okay. He only tortures kitty cats, not bears.

[The pangoro can only grunt in disapproval, but not before smashing one of her fists into an open palm. She's watching you.]

You shouldn't be exploding people's heads to beargin with, you know. Do your pokeys know of such a terrible habit?

Ahh, you got one big enough to ride, huh? Must be nice. I've mostly been the one carrying Delta Two, there.

[With the brush, he gestures over his shoulder at the sleeping Elgyem.]

She's not really built for long distance, I don't think.

Oh. I'm guessing that's some kind of Pokémon, right?

[He'll be damned. Looks like they really can be taught to read.]

Yup! I don't have any really big ones with me, but one of my friends has bear Pokémon that are huge! One of them looks like she's got icicles coming out of her mouth, but she's a sweetheart~

[The Shinx looks at Teddie, looks up at York, then huffs disdainfully and puts her head down again. As if this loser could explode anyone's heads. She's so not impressed.

(She's a little bit wrong, but, well, she's young.)

God damn, though. If that bear evolves from what York thinks it does, he just made a very fitting choice about a present for someone. All this roaring and growling is almost nostalgic, too. He's not particularly bothered, but probably better to ease up a little on the kid, anyway. He holds his hands up in the universal gesture for "don't shoot, officer, I was kidding."]

Hey, I didn't say I exploded any heads. I'm just saying I knew dudes whose heads exploded. Occupational hazard, you know how it is.

[Hey! North is a nice giant!

He nods. Delta Two doesn't sound like any Pokémon he knows. When Roxas sees the Shinx, he perks up.]

Oh! I have one of those!

[He looks down and stares before turning left and right.]

Belle! Where'd you go?!

[Something the size of a Shinx came scrambling from another aisle, sounding like its own private stampede, with the foot coordination of a duck when running. Suffice to say that this Shinx tumbles and rolls, stopping by her trainers feet. NO ONE SAW THAT.]

Enormous. Like a mountain.

[He watches the little jack o'lantern drift off. Man, all these little dudes are so damn weird, they're great.]

Oh man, so she's some kind of ice bear? I guess it'd be the equivalent of a polar bear back on Earth, except awesome.

[And also probably not extinct. We don't ask about Earth's biodiversity in the year of our savior Master Chief 25XX.]

That sounds like a Shadow my friends fought once...

[Which looked like sparkly rainbow Hulk Hogan's that could kill in one hit.

She laughs softly, nodding.]

Except she stands on her two hind legs all the time. Her name is Cho. Rosa is a Pangoro, and she looks like some rogue ninja panda.

[Empress bristles immediately. Is that--is that another Shinx? Another girl Shinx?

Well, there goes her Rivalry. But York bends down and scoops her up before his little level two baby can make a fool of herself in front of everybody.]

Easy, now, E. They're just saying hi.

[She makes a fitful little hissing sound, but by now, she's learned she can't take York on. She settles for letting herself be cradled in the crook of his arm and staring down haughtily at the other Shinx. Hmph.]

Sorry. Just caught her yesterday, so she's still a little...wild.

[Once Belle had recovered, she just stares at the other Shinx. It's good that Empress was picked up. Belle is a higher level, and would make kitty chow out of her.

Not that Roxas would let her.]

That's okay. They're all a little like that at first. Belle here tried to eat Vivi till he shocked her out of fright. She protects him when he runs around on the ground now.

[Oh! He digs around in his back and pulls out a pink poffin.]

Wanna try feeding her this? Feeding them treats helps make them friendlier faster.

[At "rogue ninja panda," York's gaze flicks towards something off-screen, but while his eyes crinkle at the corners like he's got an inside joke waiting, he just nods and keeps petting his Shinx. Little darling's fallen asleep now.]

A Shadow, huh? That sounds interesting.
