Okay, so does albinism happen to run in particular Pokémon species? I thought it might've been a newborn thing, but it's been a while and normal fur hasn't grown in yet for him at all.

[A young, energetic Sneasel clambers his way up the back of York's chair. He's kind of excessively pink.

Someone's got his first shiny is what's happening here.

The Sneasel waves at the camera, then slips back down in an undignified tumble before running off again to play with York's Rotom. York watches him go before shaking his head.]

I ask 'cause I know that can cause eye problems, but he hasn't complained about it and Delta Two hasn't picked up any bad news from him. But he's a Dark type and a baby, so I dunno how much she'd be able to get from him, anyway. Do I need to get him glasses? Keep him out of the sun?

Goodness, congratulations on your first shiny hatching, Mr. York!

[Botan is naturally all sunshine and happiness while the Weavile mother of Queens is sitting next to her with arms crossed, nodding as if to say "yep, yep, that's my kid."]

It's a special little perk we breeders get, if Pokemon that are bred have one or both parents as shinies there's a chance one of the babies will be shiny too! You can't tell from the egg that anything's different, though, so it's a special surprise.

[And he's such a charming color, too! If only all shiny Pokemon were pink, that would be lovely.]

[Before York can say anything else, Queens pops up again, lights up when he sees the Weavile next to Botan, and climbs all over a protestng York until he's safely in position to sit in York's lap and wave both his clawed little hands. York snorts and rubs between his ears.]

If you mean to ask are they all pink, no, not as far as I know. The first shiny Pokemon I ever received was a Gothorita, which is a dark purple color and has red eyes, usually they're black and have blue eyes.

[Yep. Even the eye color can be different on these Pokemon.]

It's really part of the fun to discover what exactly these rare variations of Pokemon look like!

Wonder if there's somewhere in town I can look 'em up. I'm kinda curious what shiny versions of the Pokémon I've already got would look like.

You could ask other breeders, I suppose. Since we've only just discovered the Pokemon from the Kalos region, it might not be a complete list if you discovered one.

It seems to be a Christmas tradition to give us foreigners eggs that hatch a shiny Pokemon. It's how I got my Bisharp.

...[A pause, Hiyami just looks over at her like she doesn't know what weird thing is going to come out of her mouth next.] I would think, and hope, that whoever does this wouldn't leave you out due to different beliefs. How Christmas is regarded here seems to be more on the secular level, I haven't seen a single mention of that Jesus fellow.

[Though theoretically, from what she understands about that man from Nazareth, he would be fully capable of creating miracles like shiny Pokemon.]

Aw, don't worry about it either way. I got my own way of celebrating Christmas, presents or not, and my friends won't leave me out in the cold.

Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, though obviously I'm not invested in the religious aspect of it. I think this'll be my third Christmas in Johto.

Well, he exists--Santa, I mean. And you'll see a flying deer of some type distributing gifts, it's happened at least two times I think. The first was Stantler and the second was Sawsbuck.

...And there's snow but I think that goes without saying in winter time. Be sure to bundle up.

Well, I don't find it that strange. Over in Japan we don't really do much for Christmas besides all the decorations and eating fried chicken and cake. Christianity isn't a commonly practiced religion there.

[Also Christmas is more of a romantic couple kind of holiday, so the other things about it have been a learning curve for Botan.]

Maybe it's because I've been here for a while, but I've noticed this world is a lot like Japan. Gosh, even the next region over--Kanto--has the same name as a region there. [And when she thinks about it, Goldenrod is an awful lot like Osaka sometimes.]

Yeah, I picked up on some of that. Some of the architecture I've seen in calendars and stuff seems more like that part of the world than what I'm used to, though it's all sort of quaint-looking to me.

Have you seen Ecruteak City? The architecture there is very much old world Japan, it's quite charming.

No, not yet. My team and I've been in Goldenrod for a while, think we might set up base here. Though I'm not averse to traveling when the weather clears up a little.

[How does anyone get anything done around here without cars and planes, holy moly.]

I don't need to, but I'd kind of like to collect the badges. The battle I had with Whitney was pretty fun.

I've been thinking about it for a long time, too. I really don't need to and honestly I'm not overly passionate about battling, but I like traveling and it'd be useful to have the HMs for breeding.

[She shrugs.]

But staying in Goldenrod is a good option, too. There's a lot of things to do here!

There sure are. I think the ideal would be to live here and then tour the rest of the area on our own time. Or get a job that requires some travel.

That's something I miss about the military. Saw a new planet practically every week.

Right, that's how it was back in my world, too. I used to be sent all around and met a ton of different people.

It's about a six-hour ride, right? That could be a fun vacation for next month, maybe. Won't involve too much hoofing it through the snow, still get to enjoy the trappings of civilization. There a lot to do in Saffron?

There's a theater, and there's the Psychic type Gym. Otherwise it's a bit of an...industrious sort of place? Lots of pencil pushers work at the Silph Company and the like, Silph puts out a lot of the technological things found in this world. They even make Pokeballs and these Gears we're using right now.

I would save a Kanto trip for until after you've explored a bit more of Johto, though. It's quite a different region.
